Is Google pulling a fast one on T-mobile?

Pretty much everyone to date that’s seen the pricing info on the Nexus One is disappointed. It’s not even the price that’s disappointing so much as the expectation of more from Google.. And maybe we’ll get it.

We already know that number portability is in the works for Google Voice, and some people have already ported their number. If you’re using your Google Voice number as your main number, what stops you from getting just a data plan and using GV’s VOIP and SMS functionality for all your calling needs?

You might balk at a $530 unlocked phone price, but if you’re only paying $40/month for data service, vs $80 for a subsidized, contracted phone from T-mobile, you’d make up the difference in less than 9 months.

The one major caveat to this is that you’d need an existing T-mobile SIM card because there’s no way T-mobile would give you one if you were planning on doing this.

It’s a good thing I’m a T-mobile customer whose contract expires the day before the Nexus One announcement.
